Timeless Ideas

Method

Timeless Ideas is an editorial ranking, not a mathematical one. Each idea is judged across four qualities we care about — iconicity, simplicity, boldness and taste — and placed in an order we are willing to defend.

The four qualities

  • Iconicity — how deeply the idea entered the culture and stayed there.
  • Simplicity — how cleanly one thought carries the whole thing.
  • Boldness — how much conviction it took to make, and to buy.
  • Taste — the quality of the craft, casting, cut and restraint.

Sources

Every entry is tied to a public source — the original film, a case-study page or an award archive — so any claim can be checked.

Honest limits

Rankings are subjective by design. Reasonable people will move things up and down. The order will keep shifting as new work earns its place and as we revisit older work with fresh eyes.
