Game of Thrones x Bud Light: Joust
- Entertainment brand:
- HBO / Game of Thrones
- Brand partner:
- Bud Light
- Agencies:
- Droga5 New York and Wieden+Kennedy New York
Timeless principle
A brand collaboration becomes memorable when one partner is willing to let the other transform—or even destroy—its established world.
The idea
Invade Bud Light’s medieval Super Bowl commercial with the Mountain and a dragon, killing its mascot so another brand’s ad becomes a surprise Game of Thrones trailer.
Why it works
The spot begins entirely inside Bud Light’s familiar “Dilly Dilly” kingdom, so viewers believe they know the brand and comic rules they are watching. The Mountain’s entrance changes ownership of the film in real time: the joust becomes an execution, a dragon burns the set, and the Bud Light ad resolves as a date announcement for Game of Thrones’ final season. Authentic series talent and crew make the intrusion feel canon rather than parody. HBO earns surprise by sacrificing another brand’s mascot, while Bud Light gains a cultural event larger than a normal product spot. The collaboration works because neither world stays politely intact.
